Denise, You are, and always will be more than just a mother-in- law to me. You are a woman who I admire and respect. Your strength, loyalty and high spirits will be remembered by myself and amongst many others. The memories we shared will be with me forever; listening to Tarynn?s heart beat for the first time, our crazy, wet trip to Chicago, holidays, and movie nights. You are a true a true representation of what it is like to be a noble mother, wife, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. Love Always, Sarah

Denise, I have many vague memories, and they all remind me of how strong and dedicated a mother you were. The compassion your family and friends have for you can only emphasize the kind of person you have been and the way you've touched people's lives. The last time I saw you, I think way back in 2003, I saw a woman who was not broken down by her sickness, but continued to shine. You're smile and warmth are in no doubt my lasting impressions of you, and the love i was so fortunate to witness and hear of between you and Bruce is inspiring beyond words. Sleep well and know that you will always be missed and always remain an inspiration.

To Denise, I cannot put into words how much you will be missed, but I can tell you one thing, you leave behind the strongest woman I have ever met, your daughther Shawna. She has shown and taught me more in her young 24 years of life, and I know that you and Bruce are so proud of her. I will be by her side for life, and I know you will never need to worry about her. Because of you and Bruce, your guidance, your unendding love and support, and your love for eachother, Shawna has grown up to be an independent, intelligent, gorgeous person. I thank God everyday that Shawna, you and your family are in my life. I know you will be watching down on all of us, and we love you so much. Sincerely, Erin Coughlin

Dear Bruce, Denise, Shawna and Cliff, I remember your house in Stockton and late nights of Intelevision. I remember being late on my drive from Reno to UOP for your wedding, waiting outside until the ceremony ended so I wouldn't interupt. I remember how beautiful Denise looked when you two finally emerged from the Chapel. I remember when Shawna was born. I remember when little Cliffy was born. I remember nighttime "Marco-Polo" in the pool. I remember Denise's Keenly competitive spirt. I remember the wonderful Thanksgiving dinners with the "looking forward to all year" ravioli. I remember when the kids started playing tennis and how devoted Denise was. I remember what a fun and amazingly energetic person Denise was. I wish I remembered the name of the Mexican restaurant we used to go to. I remember what an incredible Wife, Mother and Daughter Denise was. Gosh, these are but a few of the many, many memories, some of the best memories of my life, and I will treasure them always. I am so very glad that I had the privilege to know Denise Sutherland, and know, truly know, that I am the better for it. Thank you Denise. Thank you Bruce, Shawna, Cliff, Mike and Julie. Denise, although we didn't really get to know you very long, the love that you shared with our daughter holds strong. You were so excited to be a grandmother to Tarynn, you came to our home when Tarynn came home from the hospital, Bruce held her up to you and you looked at her with such love. Watching Tarynn with you was so wonderful, she loves you so much and we will always remind her of you. We wish that we could have known you when you were so active, mabey we could have learned something from you. But we did learn that the love of a husband and wife is the strongest love there is. Watching you with Bruce was so beautiful. We will remember the lesson of that love forever.

A true fighter on and off the court is the only way I can describe Denise. Never give up until the last point. It appears that the on-court Denise that I first met, was the real Denise. Shake it off and keep up the fight. What fun we had playing tennis. I will never forget the determinatiion in her face and it was still there after she became ill. The beam of pride was also glowing when she talked about her family and looked into her husband's face. That never changed with her illness. I am a better person for knowing Denise and watching the example she set as she battled her disease. Thank you Denise, for raising the bar for all of us and making us realize the value of each day and each chance we have to live so lovingly. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you find comfort in your memories.

As one of Shawna's best friends I feel I have known Denise for much longer than I actually did. I know little things like she always served a balanced dinner and didn't allow too much junk food. I know she didn't want to see others abused or bullied, and was willing to stand up for them when no one else would. I know she was an extremely caring and supportive mother and wife with a great sense of humor. I'm so thankful that Denise provided so much for her family, and have made them who they are today. Shawna has learned from example and is caring, giving, and always makes balanced dinners! The Sutherland's always make their house feel like home, and I will greatly miss hanging out and drinking wine with all the girls. All my love and support goes out to Denise's family and friends.

I remember that Denise was the cousin I played with the most during family reunions. I remember her hanging upside down on the monkey bars with her hair in braids, one lock of her bangs hanging down into her eyes, wearing her big glasses, that which would sometimes fall down her nose. Of course, as this was going on, she was smiiling her biggest, warmest smile. I remember playing hide and go seek with Denise, and laughing with her, as we acted like a couple of tomboys around Grandpa Calcagno's big ranch--that was full of hidden adventures. She was always a nice person, and as she grew older, she lost her glasses, as well as her awkward, although endearing shyness, and suddenly--she became a outwardly beautiful and articulate woman. She emerged the butterfly. Always vibrant and loving, Denise never seemed to ever be negative around anyone, and she always listened to you, as she gazed at you--with a warmth, and a secret glint in her eyes. It was as if she could see right down into your soul. Denise always wore her heart on her sleeve, and she loved her husband Bruce dearly, as he loved her. She was never a rude or fake person, which is what I loved the most about her. Denise had a sense of humor, as she and her husband would crack jokes, and have a sort of unspoken language all of their own. That was fun to watch! She was always honest and kind, and she always tried to help people in need. She was always a down-to-earth and realistic person who loved life, and lived it to the fullest. I have never met a person who loved her husband and kids more. She was always taking her kids to sporting events, and she was the ultimate mother, who gave of herself, never asking for anthing in return. "Unselfishness" was Denise's true name. I remember she was my bridesmaid at my wedding, and she enjoyed herself fully, toasting and laughing to the utmost. We had fun that day, let me tell you! Also, I enjoyed all the family get togethers she gave, when Frank and I attended and ate her really good food! I will miss Denise sorely. She didn't deserve what happened to her, and it pained me to know what she was going through. She was always in my thoughts and prayers, and I felt inspired by her courage. I know she is in Heaven, and she has gotten back that beautiful smile she lost because of her illness. She is also running and dancing again! I can only hope that I will be considered a good enough person to meet Denise up there in Heaven. There is a saying that says: only the good die young, and I believe that Denise was certainly an angel incarnate--living right her on Earth. I do hope that she is now happy and at peace up there with our Heavenly father. Thank you Denise, for being you!

Shawna-I just want to let you know how much I liked you mother and what a great "tennis mom" she was. I really appreciated how she came to every match and how positive she was to our entire team. She was really great to have around while you were on our team. Shawna, I can't even come close to imagining what you and your family have gone through. I was really touched by the caregiving article in the Lodi News Sentinel and what an amazing job you dad Bruce has been doing. My mom also died way too young and as hard as it is to do, try to remember the great family times you had. Denise, the love and devotion you showed to your family was amazing. Your benevolent nature inspired everyone around you to be a better person, and your strong, loving heart allowed everyone to share in your joys. Lucky for us, it always seemed to slip past your teeth in your brilliant smile. And lucky for me that you have passed on these wonderful qualities to your daughter, of whom I am the direct recipient of your accomplishments as a mother. Everything I love about her is everything I love in you, and thank you for welcoming me, with open arms, into your home and life. I am truly grateful for the time that I was able to spend with you, and for you introducing me to your indelible spirit. Sleep well, you will truly be missed. Love, Chad

Footprints in the Sand by Mary Stevenson One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, You said that once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me." The Lord replied, "My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I Carried You." Please know that my family and I are praying for you and your family, Shawna. I remember all the times your Mom would come to our tennis matches and really root you on! She loved to watch you play and everyone could see how very proud she was of you. Her love for you will never end. With Deepest Regards, Nicole Andrino
