Obituary of Rachel Kathryn Herbel

Rachel Kathryn Herbel, age 90, of Lodi, California died August 14, 2003 of natural causes in a local convalescent hospital. She was born Rachel Kathryn Popp in Tampa, Kansas to John and Amelia Popp. She graduated from high school in Durham, Kansas where she met and later married Edwin Herbel on Aug. 10, 1935. She and Edwin came to Lodi on their honeymoon and made their first home here. In 1943 they moved to Lockeford and in 1954 they opened the Lockeford Grocery Store which they operated until retiring in 1975. She was a longtime, faithful member of First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and active in the Women's Mission Society. Rachel was well known for her cooking and baking skills, especially her German Kuchen and her award-winning wonderful chiffon cakes. She also enjoyed growing flowers. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Hoellworth of Lodi and Granddaughter, Joanna Hoellworth of Macksburg, Ohio. Preceded in death by her husband, Edwin, on July 17, 2000 and sisters, Bertha Reuscher, Christine Reuscher and Edna Mott. A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday at Lodi Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Newman of First Baptist Church officiating. Committal will be at Cherokee Memorial Park. Visitation at Lodi Funeral Home on Sunday from noon to 8 P.M., Monday, 8 A.M. to 8 A.M., Tuesday 8 to 10 A.M.
