I was deeply saddened to read about Koby, he was an honorable man. I will miss him. Koby sent me on many trips transporting minors, while he was Transportation officer, some of which I wrote about when I was editor of a newspaper we published at the 'hall', he laughed a lot about that article. I also traveled with him and got to know him pretty well. We also played on a softball team in the annual County softball tournament. When he became a probation officer, I would see him coming to the 'hall'. My heart goes out to his family, the deep pain will pass and soon you can remember him without tears, but with laughter and smiles, he would want it that way, to be remembered with a smile and a memory.

My prayers are with the Kobayashi family. I am sadden at heart by Wayne's death. Wayne was such a good person. I have know Wayne for over 30 years, going back to Fresno State to working at the hall. Card playing, softball, and betting on football games was many things Wayne and I enjoyed. We always wanted to swap work t-shirts. Wayne gave me a probation shirt, I would give him a one. shirt. He was only with us for a short while but he made a tremendous impact on a lot of people through his work and his friendship. I will truly miss Wayne.

My deepest sympathy to the Kobayashi family, I will miss that smile and the twinkle in his eye when he told his jokes and made us all laugh. He made our workplace more enjoyable with his presence. His frustrations with our computers was always a sure laugh to the clerical pool, and he would just hang his head and grin, give us the lost look and we would end up doing whatever for him!!! How we will miss that.!

I worked as a receptionist at Peterson Juvenile Hall in the mid 70's where I met Wayne Kobayashi. He was a pleasant and caring person with a contagious smile and a great big heart. Koby had genuine concern for the wards at the hall. Several months ago I saw him, we talked a few moments; I noticed that same smile. To his family and friends I send my sympathy and prayers. Wayne will be missed by all who had the opportunity to cross his path. He had this special smile that expressed his warmth and friendship. I met Wayne prior to becoming a fellow co-worker at my brother Mike & Pinky's house. It was nice to hear his laughter and coments while watching HBO boxing events hosted there. We will not forget him as a friend and college. Gone too soon from our lives. Our prayers are left for him and his family. Respectfully, Ivan & Clara Dimas

Kobayashi, I forgot to say thanks... 30 years ago we headed south on I-5 where eventually you dropped me off at a Boy's Home in Southern California so I could better myself. You said, "Do good, so you don't have to be locked up all your life". In the following years, there were many temptations and close calls. But nothing that would ever take me down Matthew RD or down the highway again. I've since been Retired from the Navy for one year after 22 years of service. I guess I'm one of the lucky few you met and counseled as a "confused and lost youth" that "made it" through the rough times. I can reflect when you (among others...Shorty longhorn, Douglas, Ralph Hernandez, Ms. Mitchell and Ms Hamon)were supportive and understanding, during my youth. Thanks for your support and wisdom.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mr.Kobyashi. I regarded Mr. Kobyashi as a mentor and friend. I cannot recall a time when leaving Mr. Kobyashi's office where I was not smiling or encouraged. While aspiring to complete school he always took time to ask, "Are you finished yet?" Months would go by and he would again ask, "How much longer you got (with a big smile)?" This May I could not wait to say, "Hey Koby, --I'm finished!" His laughs, jokes, hilarious faces, and value put into those around him I will always treasure. My prayers and condolences to the family.

We were really an active bunch of kids. I remember Wayne,Rudy and myself riding our tricycles and riding over a neighbors flower bed and just destroying all his plants and flowers. I still remember that incident up to now. May Wayne rest in peace. Condolenses to the family.

Joy, Candace, Jordan, Wally, Ken and the Kobayshi family; I worked, off and on, with Wayne for most of the 28 years he was with the Probation Department. Professionally, Wayne brought several gifts to the Department: He knew the law and how to apply it. He wrote literally thousands of pre-sentence reports, making recommedations to the Courts on the proper disposition of his cases. He wrote clearly and dispassionately, making carefully reasoned recommendations to the Judges. He was sympathetic with victims and demanded personal responsibility from offenders. Whether at Juvenile Hall or at Juvenile or Adult probation, he was able to establish and maintain rapport with the clients without accepting excuses for poor behavior. On a personal level I fondly remember analyzing every obscure statistic in trying to figure our the PAC-10 football schedule with Wayne in an attempt to beat the local football pools. I especially recall the huge grin on his usually taciturn face when, to the chagrin of others, won the pool, which was quite often (no thanks to my advice)! Wayne treasured his family. We often talked about our mutual hopes and desires for our kids and grandkids. He placed a high value on education and worked hard to get Candace and Jordan into the school programs that would help them most. Wayne was one of those people who left the world a better place than he found it. He served his family and his community well, having touched literally thousands of lives in a positive way. What better tribute could one have! Finally, he was my friend. Now he is gone. I shall surely miss him. Please accept my sincerest sympathy and condolences. Bob Montgomery

Wayne and I worked juvenile supervision way back when. Wayne had a natural knack with kids as well as a gift for picking horses. Like many of his wards would say, I'd have been a lot richer if I'd taken his advice (about $28,000, but that's long story). Wayne encouraged me to get into the report-writing end of probation, which he didn't like, and that time I took his advice. Both I and the Department struck gold. Wherever you are, Wayne, thanks a million!

Joy, Candace, and Jordan - I can't imagine how hard this time is for you - losing Wayne and Mr. Masaoka at the same time. I am also stunned from hearing of Wayne's passing. I grew up with Wayne on the southside of Stockton. I think we first met as children at Calvary Presbyterian Church. Our dads were friends and worked together at Centromart. We attended Marshall and Edison together and became good friends. We played on the same basketball teams for Calvary and later Buddhist Church. He was called "Sugar Bear" back then. Wayne helped me develop social confidence and helped give me a social life. After high school, I moved to the Bay Area and Wayne married Joy. We never reconnected after that so you don't know me very well, but I have always felt a tie to him. I never thanked him for what he did for me, but I think he understood. At least he kept inviting to me to those all night poker games. I never went because I don't play poker well. I am going to miss seeing him around. - Nelson Nagai

I had the pleasure of meeting Wayne when he played for the Sampan softball team and during the county softball tournaments. He was such a good sport and was always so nice and pleasant to be around. Wayne always had a friendly "hello" when we had trouble calls at probation or if you just happened to see him at downtown probation. I last saw Wayne last month when he received his county service award. It saddens me that his retirement was cut short after working many years for the county. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. My deepest sympathy and prayers to Wayne's family.

To the Kobayashi family with much respect and sympathy. Wayne was a close and long time friend. Going back to elementary school, McKinley vs. Taylor basketball, flag football, softball compe- tition. Little did I know that my competitor would become my friend. We both attended Marshall Jr. High, Edison Sr. High, and Delta Jr. College together. There are many fond memories especially the many hours hanging out at Ted Engkabo's house at "7th & Lincoln". Enjoying the happy times along with frustrating times that come with growing up. While away in the service, Wayne would write and let me know what was going on and offer words of encour- agement. Returning home to eventually play softball on the Sampan team for many years. The dances, the banquets, the thrill of competing alongside Wayne. I've worked 30 years with the Calif. Youth Authority, Wayne was the one who encouraged me to apply. This would give me the opportunity to work with his wife Joy for many years. A person who reflects the quiet strength of Wayne. Both always willing to listen and offer advice. To Candace and Jordan, look out for mom and make your Dad proud.
