Shocked and saddened to hear about Miles' passing. He was one of those fine people that I could look back on in my life and really count on as solid. My father regarded him very closely, and instilled that observation in our family. I'm sure the fish in this world are breathing a little easier now. He will be missed. Stan, Jr.

Dear Mrs. Sperling, Carol and Cindy (and family), I was deeply saddened when I came across Mr. Sperling's obituary on the web site. I was in the process of looking up another individual and was shocked to see Miles' name. He and Dad worked together for many years and I believe they held a great deal of respect for each other and what they stood for. I have memories of going to the Police Dept picnics out at Lodi Lake where I became friends with the other "cop's kids" like Cindy, Valerie Kelley, Robin Brunson. It wasn't always easy being a cop's kid, but we held our own, because our Dad's made us proud. Mr Sperling was always very nice to me when I would go to the station to visit my Dad. I remember him wearing his gray detective hat (it sort of reminded me of Joe Friday on Dragnet and I thought he looked cool). Anyway...I had to express my sorrow for your loss. Mr. Sperling has a wonderful legacy that will live on through his family and friends. God bless....Donna Ehrhardt Mann

I did not have the opportunity to work with Captain Sperling since I was only 18 years old when he retired. I did, however, have the opportunity to speak with him on occasion. The last time we spoke, we talked about the FBI National Academy. I was asking him about his experiences since I was scheduled to attend the Academy a few weeks later. I always enjoyed my conversations with Captain Sperling and will miss seeing him at Lodi Police functions. I wish to send my condolences to Scott and all the family.

To Helen, (Carol & Bob), Scott & Jill and other family members, I wish to relate to you my heartfilled sorrow in the loss of Miles. Of all the so called old timers myself included,Miles was the only one that retired and wasn't out dated or a so called dinosaur. He was respected by all of us who worked with him. I was sad when he left us (retired) the first time and even more sad now that he gone; until we meet again with God. May God continue to be with all of you and continue to confort each of you. In Gods love Bruce McDaniel

When I became Marc Yates' secretary, Miles was the Patrol Divison Captain. It was my pleasure and privilege to work with and for Miles. His wonderful sense of humor, his love of the department, the fishing stories, the tales of times past - all blended together to create a most admirable man. Through the years the three of us shared many times of joy, times of sadness, times of hard work and long days. The sense of mutual caring and trust was one I shall never forget. The world is a better place because Miles lived in it.

Miles was a big part of why I wanted to come to work at Lodi PD. As an Explorer Scout I got to know a kind and professional man who loved LPD. He sat on the oral board when I was hired in 1979 and somehow I passed. He always had very high standards tempered with a down-to-earth sole. Miles never had a bad work to say about people and when he retired from PLD he did it with grace and as a gentleman. In the years after his retirement I had some oppertunities to talk with Miles and always knew that he still loved LPD and what we had become. He also loved his family, Grandson Scott, and Great grandchildren! I was very glad I had the chance to talk with Miles the day before he passed. He was at peace with life and what was to come. We talked of LPD, fishing and his boat, his family, and many other things. Miles said he was so glad I had been appointed Chief of Police of LPD and he was happy his grandson Scott was working for me. He expressed that Scott would walk through a wall for him and I saw a certain glee in his eyes when he said that. I told Miles that Scott was doing great at LPD and I felt very lucky to have him. I thanked Miles for all his advice over the years and what an inspriation he had always been to me and I knew many others. Chief Jerry Adams Lodi Police Department

We are saddened to hear of Miles? passing. He was a good friend and a great neighbor to our family for the nine years we lived next door. He always had good fishing stories to share with Gary and our older son David. When I started working at the Police Department in 1980, Miles was tickled and gave me a lot of encouragement. He had a wealth of history to share from his many years on the force. (Now that I reflect back on my 25 years with LPD, I don?t believe I have ever heard an unkind word said about Captain Sperling.) After we moved, we?d often run into Miles and Helen at various City and Police functions. He always greeted us with a hearty handshake and a happy hello. Miles was so proud when his grandson became a police officer and when Scott joined the Lodi force, Grandpa was beaming with pride. He will be missed by so many!

Miles is in so many memories of my childhood. I know my Dad felt that Miles was like a brother to him, they made quite a duo at the police department. When these two big guys walked into a room, they got somebody's attention. I am not sure if my Dad will be able to make it to his services, due to his health. He also has not been well the past few years but I know that Miles and his family is very much in his thoughts. He will be remembered for his love, kindness and caring for others. For being a good man, a good father, a good husband and a good policeman. I will remember that ready smile he always had for this pig tailed little girl who always felt so safe with these two men, who teased and cared about her. God Bless you all. God needed a special kind of angel, that only Miles could be, so he brought him home with him. In love and remembrance, Tammy and Larry Elwood

Capt Sperling was the Patrol division commander when I was hired in 1975. I remember Capt Sperling as a stern, but fair supervisor who had a great sense of humor when you got to know him better. Capt Speriling was respected by those of us who worked with him, and admired by the community as a fine family man and citizen. He led a full life and accomplished much. Now that I'm reaching the end of my career I find myself working with his grandson, of whom I am sure Capt Sperling is proud.
