Debbie & family, I remember when Darrell first came to Lodi. He had a garage sale and had lots of "junk", my kind of stuff. We became buddies after that! We enjoyed similar tastes in cars, basketball and of coarse "junk" After all one man's junk is another man's treasure. I got lots of "treasures" from Darrell, including our front door which he had carried with him from Kentucky. The clock in our dining room was from him. The Lodi thermometer in the sun room was from Darrell. He got me started collecting Lodi Memorabillia and kept me supplied on a regular basis. Yes I will miss all the "junk" , but most of all I will miss the talks we had about, life, religion, kids, sports, cars, and more. Darrell was unique and he will be missed by many. My wife and I send our sincere condolences to the family. May God be with you in your loss. Time heals but the great memories remain. Marcel & Bonnie

Dear Debbie and Family. I would like to extend my condolences to you and your family on your loss. I work in the Safety Department at the Home Office of Asplundh (PA). I use to enjoy when Darrell would come in to the Home Office with the rest of the Safety Supervisors for their yearly visit with Jim Allard. Darrell had a wonderful sense of humor and could always bring a smile to your face no matter how bad of a day you were having. He will truly be missed. God bless you and your family at this very difficult time. Best regards, Evelyn Caprio.

I met the Smiths after they moved to Sherwood, OR around 1989. Jacke and my daughter Colleen were in preschool together and became best friends. Thereafter the Smiths and the Desmonds gravitated! Darrell was a hustler for his former employer - Asplundh - who's company colors were ORANGE! Every year when Sherwood had their Halloween party in "Downtown Sherwood" you would find Darrell adorned in ORANGE standing amongst the Gouls and Gobblens partaking with his children in the festive events. Further, Darrell was always there with the company truck to grind up and remove Christmas trees as a fund raiser for one of Debbie's causes! Darrell was always a player at our annual Easter party, participating in the events with his children. And he taught us "Croquet" at our annual Labor Day picnic at the Trolly Park in (I forget the town ) Oregon. Anyway, Darrell was an interesting guy, I enjoyed him, I loved him and his family. His special gift was asking me to be Andrea's godfather. You will be missed!

Deb, I want you to know how truly sad I am that your family has had to endure such a loss. You were right when you told me either you loved darrell or you didnt. I was one of the lucky ones who really enjoyed and cared alot about darrell. He was fun to work with! He helped me with different values on items and it was just plain fun working with him. And getting acquainted with you Debbie has been equally as enjoyable. I pray Darrell is now at peace, and I am thankful that he didnt suffer long. I can only imagine how hard it is on you and your little family, but do know that God loves you, and he as well as Darrell will watch over your family. Also believe that in times of stress/strain, Darrell is there, holding your hand and telling you "it will be ok". Cherish your memories, dont be afraid to make new ones, and remember I am just a phone call away if you ever need an ear! May God Bless you and your family now and forever. My sincerest simpathies to you Debbie Donna Nietschke (ex owner) Classy Rags Thrift Millswood Middle School

I am so sorry to hear about Darrell. I was told just yesterday and am still in shock. Darrell loved you guys so much and always talked about you. I have never really been the sort that made and kept good friends. I'm not sure why, but Darrell was one person in my life that I counted as a good friend. I will miss him. I always knew how much he loved his wife and how very much he loved each of his kids. He was a kick to be around, I never laughed so hard as I did when I was with him. There's too little of that in the everyday course of living our lives. I'm sorry to miss his service but hope you would allow Sarena and I to contact you later and visit with you someday and remember the laughter Darrell brought into our lives. Our heartfelt prayers are with you and your family. Love, Dave and Sarena Johnson

I lost my best friend and brother. I will miss him calling me two or three times a week to pass on jokes or to tell me about something he bought at a yard sale. We loved going to yard sales, flea markets, and going through old barns looking for that treasure. We talked to each other about anything and everything. We were friends all our lives. When he was young, I was his hero. When we got older, he was mine. I will always remember the good times and the bad. I know there will be events that will make me remember him most. He would call me on my Birthday and Father's Day. He has a nice family, and I wish them the best. I know it is hard on them, but it is hard on me too. I will miss him forever.

Uncle Darrell was always there for us. I remember every time we moved, Darrell was there to help. When we moved to Louisville when I was 12, Darrell had long hair and the neighbors thought I had a hippy for a father. I will always remember Darrell's sarcastic sense of humor. I believe that I picked up my sarcasm from Darrell. I know he is in a better place and will remember all the great things about Darrell. I am thankful for him bringing Aunt Debbie into our lives and my four cousins he helped bring into the world. We love you Darrell and will see you again some day.

Darrell left his beautiful smile, handsome face and sense of humor on each of his beautiful children. Debbie's inner spiritual grace and strength and beautiful smile will help them all persevere. Leave it to Darrell to rush to heaven while the Pope was still holding open the gate! Thank you, Darrell, for bringing your beautiful family to Oregon so we could meet and for agreeing that I would be ok as Andrea's Godmother! Love, Eileen

Many years have passed since Darrell and I spent much time together but it is not far from my mind and the person I have grown to be. Your family is beautiful, happy, and will live on thanks to all you have taught each of them as you did my brothers and I so many years ago.

Darrell was my Godfather, and he always took that role very serious. We have so many pictures of Christmas, Easter, my First Communion, Birthdays, and other special times where Darrell is with us. We were probably his family before he had his own. Several weeks ago, my Dad was talking about my little Madison, who absolutely adores him, and he was saying how everyone needs someone who thinks they are special. After my Dad said that, I kept thinking about it because I was Darrell's "someone special" for a long time, probably longer than I realize. He made me feel special just by being around. As teenagers all of the girls in our neighborhood would go crazy when he would drive up in that custom painted van with the palm trees on the side, and he would step out with his long curly brown hair. I was very quick to tell everyone ,"Yes, that is my Godfather." He encouraged me to play the guitar when I was younger, and even bought me a guitar and case for it that I still have. I remember one time he bought me a pair of jeans from Shaheens that were lined in flannel and the cuffs at the bottom showed the flannel. (Sounds rather hideous now.) I wore those jeans until they had no knees left in them at all. I am sure if they had been from anyone else, there is no way I would have even tried them on. Whatever he told me, I believed because I believed in him. I still trust him that this big mole on my chin is really a beauty mark, and I dare anyone to disagree. I am so happy for Darrell that he had the opportunity in his life to have his own family also. His children are absolutely beautiful on the inside and out. He told me one time when he came to U of K to see me that he loved Debbie and he really always wanted to have a family. That too, has always stuck with me. I will pray for Debbie, Cole, the Girls, and my Dad because I know it will be the hardest for them. I will always remember the good times with Darrell and I am sure his family will too.

Heart Felt Sadness for the loss of Darrell, and for what his family is going through. The "Old Southenders" of Louisville have a heavy heart today as we reminisce of Champ's Roller Rink, where Donnie and Darrell use to skate, Derby parties, Main Street and Bardgetown Road get togethers. May God Bless and Help his Family during this time.
