I have such fond memories of working with Paul from 1967 to 1974. We shared offices at 1020 N Street as Senior Specialists. Remember a field trip we made to Eureka to audit and appraise a very large wood products company at Balboa. The company was trying to make paper out of redwood chips. The sand in the chips was eating through the conveyor ducting so we had a valuation problem. Paul and I had a wild airplane ride between Sacramento and Eureka in a Convair 404. In 1976, we were the two Principal Appraisers in the Valuation Division until he became the Chief of the new Timber Tax Division. I so enjoyed his sense of humor and his winning smile. He was a professional and an expert in his field. I will not forget him.

MY FRIEND - PAUL CREBBIN My name is Max Frizzell and Paul is my best friend since we met, September 1952, in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) headquarters in San Francisco. Both of us were fresh out of college with Paul achieving a Masters Degree in Forestry from the University of California. We both worked for about ten years for BLM. Our areas of responsibility were Del Norte and Humbolt Counties (the redwood belt) for Paul and I was responsible for forestry activities from Nevada County to Mariposa County (the Central Sierra Unit). Our forestry duties were directed toward the appraisal of stands of timber for sale, writing timber sale contracts, supervising timber harvesting, and determining the value of illegalably removed timber from BLM lands (Timber Tresspass). Additionally, we prepared timber theft cases for court trial and provided testimony as needed. We often assisted each other in field preparations. Per diem was $9.00 per day for lodging and food so we doubled up staying cheap hotels and motels. In September 1967 I started working for the State of California, Board of Equalization, Property Tax Department. Paul had already joined this Department. We worked together as timber and land appriasers on private lands in northern California. Our appraisals assisted and kept County Assessors in line in developing their timber assessment rolls. Paul worked for several Property Tax Divisions: Property Tax, Valuation, and Timber Tax. The implemation of the Timber Tax Division was a major change in the way timber is taxed in California. Paul took a leadership role, in a timely manner, in bringing this about. Paul had the ability to appraise many different types of properties, to name some others than the lowly house and lot: every sawmill, planing mill and paper pulp plant in Northern California. While working in the Valuation Division, he added the valuation of Rail Road Companies to his list. Paul liked people and people liked him. He could listen. He had the respect of the Timber Industry, which he treated fair and square over major valuation disputes. He chaired many public meetings and timber county assessors all appreciated his services. Above all Paul was a hands of Forester/Appraiser. I can remember that when he was a Dvision Chief, he continued to put on his boots and go to the woods to clear his mind of the office problems. That's a forester for you. I shall miss him.

I met Paul as a docent at the California State Railroad museum. He was a docent long before me. After graduating from the docent training class, I remember Paul from my "first day on the job". We greeted me and "showed me the ropes". If you ever looked up "gentleman" in the dictionary, you would see Paul Crebbin as the meaning. He is missed.

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Paul for over 25 years. Our careers at the Board followed similar paths and I had the benefit of observing and learning from his many successes. As an administrator, Paul held the respect and appreciation of his staff. He was a no-nonsense guy who worked well with people. He gave of himself freely in a polite and professional manner. Paul was the architect of the present Timber Tax program. He was the prime resource person for the Board, Legislature, County Assessors, and Timber Industry in getting the law changed and he then built the program from the ground up; a masterful achievement that will serve this State well for a long time to come. Paul was first and foremost a professional Forester; he loved to go to the woods. He was a wonderful person and a great friend and I and his many colleagues from the Board will surely miss him. With my deepest sympathy, Bill Jackson

Paul wsa one of nicest people I have ever met in my life! I attended his and Shirley's wedding and truthfully, he seemed a bit old to me, even though he was only seven years older than me. And because of military and other obligations I did not see either him or Shirley for several years. But when we did get a chance to renew old friendships I realized what a wonderful gentleman he was and also what a nice person I had for a cousin. He, Shirley, Laura and her children made many trips from Sacramento up here to Chico for visits, which was a Godsend, since my Mother was unable to travel and she also thought so much of them. Paul will be missed by all who knew and loved him and The Chase family heads that list.

I didn't work directly with Paul, but worked in the same building so I saw him often. He always had a smile and a "Hi, how are you?" when ever I would see him. I'm sure he will be missed by many.
