My grandmother, Lydia Dollinger-Duerksen, was Katie Bitzer's eldest sister. As a young child, I remember visiting Aunt Katie in Lodi and enjoying her home full of wonderful foods. Just a few months ago I visited her along with my mother's youngest sister, Lolita Hirst, and I had the pleasure of listening to Aunt Katie describe how to prepare our most favorite of all German foods, wurst! Aunt Katie complained that the rest home would not allow her to work. At 100 years of age, she still had that German work ethic. I will always remember Aunt Katie.
