Obituary of Walter Charles Barnes

Walter Charles Barnes died June 8, 2006 at the age of 91. He was born in Shields, North Dakota on August 20, 1914. He lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from 1930 to 1940. He also worked at John Morell's meat packing plant. His four children, Marijane, Gerald, Marshall and James were born in Sioux Falls. He was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-45 in the South Pacific. He had been a salesman for Jewel Tea Co. of Barrington, Illinois until 1950, covering territory in Minnesota and Iowa. He worked at Oscar Meyer in Madison, Wisconsin from 1950-1976 (Hobby farm, lake cottage- Wisconsin). In 1976, he moved to Acampo, California, where he assisted his son in raising thoroughbred horses and other livestock until 1996, and he then cared for his wife. Mr. Barnes was an avid hunter and fisherman who also loved playing cards and doing woodwork. He was a former member of the Moose Club. He is survived by son, Gerald Barnes, MD, of Stockton; daughter, Marijane Lising of Acampo; son, Marshall Barnes of Madison, Wisconsin and son, James Barnes of Atlanta, Georgia; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Melvida, his wife of 66 years, along with brothers, Morton, Elmer and Linus and sisters, Edith, Florence, Melissa, Alice and Vera. There is no visitation, and committal is private.
