Obituary of Melvin Otto Hieb

Melvin Otto Hieb, 80, of Lodi died Feb. 27. He was born in Lodi in 1927. The son of Louis Hieb and Pauline Hoffman Hieb, Mr. Hieb grew up working on the family ranch east of Lodi, attended Harmony Grove School and was confirmed in St. Peter's Lutheran Church. After graduating from Lodi High School, Mr. Hieb enlisted in the Navy, trained as a radio operator in Los Angeles and served in the Pacific Theater at the end of World War II. Mr. Hieb worked as a Vineyardist on his ranch east of Lodi for over 50 years. He was a member of the Victor Farm Bureau, the Mokelumne Volunteer Fire Department and the Lodi Grape Growers Association. He also worked as a 4-H project leader for the Harmony Grove 4-H Club. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church since 1956 and enjoyed assisting his wife with Sunday School and volunteering on church building trips. He was an avid sports fan, reader and fisherman. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Virginia Hieb of Lodi, a son, Mike Hieb and wife Linda Tischer of Ashburn, VA, a daughter, Ellen Mileski of Annapolis, MD, a daughter, Carol Hieb and husband Greg Miller of Torrance, CA, sisters-in-law Betty Hieb and Thelma Hieb of Lodi, two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Hieb and Leroy Hieb and a son-in-law, Michael Mileski. Visitation will be held Friday 4:00-8:00 at the Lodi Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 3 at 11:00 at the First United Methodist Church in Lodi. Friends and Family are invited to meet after the Service for a lunch in the Fellowship Hall.
