Obituary of Walter "Cliff" George

Walter "Cliff" George of Modesto, formerly a longtime resident of Lodi, passed way peacefully at home in Modesto with his granddaughter and her family at his side. Mr. George was born in Portland, Oregon to Walter Charles and Evelyn DuPuis George on May 1, 1925. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 - 1946 in the Pacific and then the Reserves from 1946 - 1951. He moved to California in the 1950's, first settling in Stockton and then eventually in Lodi. He married Thelma Viola Ross on November 3, 1953 in Hillsboro, Oregon. He started in the printing trade in Baker, Oregon in 1940. Mr. George worked as a printer for fifty years for various newspapers, retiring from the Stockton Record after thirty-two years in 1988. He then worked part-time at Lodi Funeral Home until 1990. He was a member of The American Legion Post # 41 and the Elk's Lodge, both in Baker, Oregon, the Lodi Masonic Lodge # 256, Master in 1984 and 1988, Stockton Scottish Rite, Ben Ali Shrine, Live Oak Chapter of the Eastern Star Patron 1988, Stockton Chapter Order #373 of the Eastern Star, Patron 1990. He was president of the Stockton Typographical Union for six years and many other Union positions, including international laws committee in 1970. He enjoyed stamp collecting, coin collecting, golf and photography. He is survived by his daughter, Glenda (Kenneth) Lee of Lodi; grandson, Kevin (Mary) Lee of Modesto and granddaughter, Terri (Stephen) Myers of Modesto; four great-grandchildren and two step-great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Thelma Viola George in 2003, brother, Robert George and two sisters, Lucille Standley and June Sheridan. Friends are invited to visit Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Lodi Funeral Home. A Chapel service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Committal will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817 or local Hospice organization.
