Obituary of Robert A. Bainbridge

Robert A. Bainbridge passed away peacefully at his home on October 23, 2007, after a heroic battle with cancer. He was born on August 27, 1921 in Fort Bragg, California. Robert graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. As a Captain, he served as a navigator in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After his discharge, he attended Hastings School of Law. Robert practiced law briefly in Fort Bragg before moving to Lodi in 1950 to continue his career. He served as the Municipal Court Judge in Lodi from 1951 to 1976. After his voluntary retirement, he served as a visiting Superior Court Judge throughout the state of California for several years. Judge Bainbridge was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and he served on the Board of the Lodi Public Library for several years. Judge Bainbridge was a voracious reader with a passion for history, and he shared his love of books with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and loved to travel, especially to the various activities and sporting events of his grandchildren. His family will miss his famous "shortcuts" to known destinations. Judge Bainbridge is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ellen Bainbridge of Lodi; his daughters: Janet Sternfels of Lodi, Laura Bainbridge of Stockton and Sarah Armstrong of Monte Sereno; his grandchildren: Robert, Katherine and Michael, and his great grandchildren: Samantha, Thomas, Tessa and Andrew. He is also survived by his brother, Roy Bainbridge and sisters: Margaret McCarthy and Norma Gibson. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Bainbridge. Per his request, funeral services will be private. Contributions in his memory may be made to Lodi Public Library Foundation: Book Fund. 201 West Locust St. Lodi, CA. 95242.
