An honest, loving man with integrity and a quick sense of humor, he will be missed but we are so grateful he was part of our lives. Interested in many things and having an exceptional memory, he could have in-depth conversations with anyone. His enjoyment of people was shown by the many friends from his childhood with whom he regularly communicated. As a boy he worked long hours before and after school. As a young man he was a working cowboy in the Badlands with funny and gritty stories of his time in the saddle. His favorite chore on his favorite horse, Beans, was to gather the horses from the mountains in the spring. With his broad background and experience in his specialty, Chief Dale Hjort served all over the world in the U.S. Navy as a decorated Engineman Chief E7. He loved dogs, cats, horses, mules and birds. Some of his favorite 4-leggeds were Sissy, Daisy, Blessing, Zena, Mango, Bug, Susie, Bello, Nugget, Howdy, Mike &Gloria, and Chai with whom he would watch the Oakland A’s. Always a country boy at heart, he was a fine and generous gardener and he loved the Sierra Big Trees. Dale was a long-time supporter of the Loel Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
